Mother's Day Weekend in San Pedro 2014

A friend of Dennis' who taught with him lives in San Pedro in a quaint old home around the corner from Cabrillo Beach. She contacted us and asked if we'd like to stay at their place Mother's Day weekend since they would be away. We took her up on her offer. Dennis took Friday off of work and we headed to the beach!

After arriving on Friday afternoon, we took a walk up to the Korean Friendship Bell, enjoyed the view of the ocean, and let the kids play at the park for a bit. We followed this with pizza and a movie. Nice start to the weekend!

On Saturday we headed over to Port's O Call. It wasn't quite what we had remembered. We ended up having lunch across the street at a coffee shop. Then we headed over to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium to check out the tide pools.

We enjoyed checking out the tide pools and looked for things we had studied in science this year. We found an empty sea urchin shell, sea anemones camouflaged with bits of sand as well as many small hermit crabs. It was a beautiful day.

We spent a little bit of time in the learning areas of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

But the kids really just wanted to play on the beach.

Sunday morning Dennis wanted to go out for breakfast for Mother's Day. There was a cafe right up the street that had been recommended. I thought it was further up so said we should drive. We couldn't find any place to park and then there was no place to park back near the house so we could walk up. After driving around for a bit we ended up back at the coffee shop we had had lunch at the day before. It was a short wait and a good breakfast. I appreciated it!

After breakfast we went to the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro. This center takes in injured and unhealthy sea lions and seals found along the many beaches in the area. They rehabilitate them and then release them back into the wild. It was noisy and smelly; but neat to see.

Following our visit to the rescue center, we headed over to Point Fermin lighthouse. It wasn't open yet for tours, so we just walked around it and let the kids play on the playground for a bit.

Our views from the various windows in the house.

We enjoyed our spur of the moment get away and were thankful for friends for allowing us to stay in their house. It was a nice way to spend Mother's Day weekend and doubled as field trip/school days as well!
