Cabrillo Aquarium 2014

During our spring break we decided to take a family field trip to the Cabrillo Aquarium. This is such a neat place to visit and we had a great time. It's a good 40 minute drive from home, but it was well worth it and I'm pretty sure we'll go again; especially since we didn't explore the tide pools this time around.

Jellies!
Loved the "hands on" things.
We had just studied about bivalves and mollusks.
.

As soon as I took this guy's picture, he darted away. It was almost like he was posing for me.
Baby Octopus

Strawberry Field Coral
Giant Sea Stars
Touch pool with lots of sea stars and sea anemones.

Using their proboscis to eat the fish below.
Giant Lobster
Deep Sea Angler Fish. . . We studied these first in science. It was neat to see a real one.
The night before there was a grunion run. The Aquarium had collected sand with eggs in it. We got to hatch grunion eggs. Very cool! Josh didn't want to, so he was our photographer.
The jars held sand. Then sea water was poured in. We held our hands over the top and swirled until the eggs began to hatch. It was like popcorn!

It was getting late in the afternoon, so we didn't take the time to explore the tide pools, but we did go out on the beach for a little bit.

I very highly recommend this place as a field trip or just a family outing. Check out their website and plan a trip!
