Aquarium of the Pacific 2013

We chose once again to take advantage of the Aquarium of the Pacific's Homeschool Days in September. The kids and I spent the night at my parents' house the night before and my mom joined us on our outing. This year, our field trip was enhanced by the fact that we are studying ocean animals in our Apologia science curriculum. We'd only completed a few lessons by the time we went, but we got quite a lot out of the exhibits that we had already covered. And I like that we'll have our past experiences to draw on as we continue to study the topic.

First up was the topic of the abyssal plain. I found it interesting that James Cameron is one of only three people that has been down to the deepest part of the ocean. God is so creative and made some very fascinating and odd-looking creatures to live in the depths of the oceans.

This reminded me of a giant "pill bug".
We were able to touch the moon jellies this time - not that they "feel" like anything. Amazing creatures.

Our oceans are filled with such wonderful colors and texture.
E spent quite a bit of time with the puffins. We watched them being fed and enjoyed their antics as they dove around and came up to the window.

These were the little guys. . . about the size of a quarter.

J loved the video of the octopus opening the jar and taking out the food inside. These are smart creatures!

E's always up for getting her hands wet and slimy. She had fun getting "hugs" from the anemones.

The rays were friendly on this day.

This sea lion was super friendly. The little boy kept running back and forth with his hat and the sea lion followed him. It was so cute!

Dory and Nemo!

Color means danger, danger, danger; but they're so purty!
This guy looks like an alien!
Reminds me of a heart.
Spent some time discovering what whales sound like.

We had a fun time and learned a lot. Thanks, Mom, for joining us on our field trip!
