Brass Rubbing Medieval Arts Center 2014

We enjoyed a very unique field trip to the Brass Rubbing Medieval Arts Center in Long Beach. The kids had an opportunity to learn about the Middle Ages through the craft of Brass Rubbing. The center is tucked away in a small church and does this program for school children. The center includes more than 100 engraved plates. The kids could choose to do an entire smaller plate or a portion of a larger one. There was quite a variety, but several kids had hoped to do the dragon plates! Josh ended up choosing a lion while Ellie chose a unicorn. They reminded us of animal characters from The Chronicles of Narnia series - Aslan and Jewel from "The Last Battle". It was a neat project to be able to bring home and I loved that it went along with our history studies this year.

This was a neat find - a plate of Saint George. We had just read about him in history before going on the field trip. George lived between A.D. 250 and 300. He was a high-ranking soldier under the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Because he refused to worship Diocletian, he was tortured and put to death. The day of his death has become known as the feast of Saint George. But another reason he is remembered is for the legend that he slew a dragon to save the king's daughter.
