Part Three: The Regions of California

A region is an area of land that is different from other areas due to its physical features, climate, people, or industries. God created each of these areas not only for our enjoyment, but to work together for our good.

Coast
*The California Coast stretches for 1,264 miles from the Oregon border in the north to Mexico in the south.

*Most of California's Coastal Region is rocky with chilly waters.

*The San Francisco Bay, on the state's northern coast, is the largest landlocked harbor in the world.

*Sandy beaches and warm surf exist only on the state's most southern coast.

*The mountain range that separates the Coastal Region from the Central Valley is called the Coastal Range

*The Coastal Region contains 2 groups of islands. These islands’ names are Farallon Islands, Northern and Channel Islands, Central-Southern

*More than half of California’s people reside in the coastal region.

*Most of California’s coast is mild throughout the year with very dry summers and moderate rainfall in the rest of the year. Snow is rare along most of the coast.

*The northern coast’s cool and wet climate helps thick forests grow.

*The sunny southern coast attracts people who prefer a warm climate.

*The southern coast is good for filming, sports and tourism

*Animals of the coast: sea lions, sea otter, sea cucumber, western gull, bat sea star, blue whale, brown pelican, dungeness crab, Garibaldi, giant sea bass, gray whales, green sea turtle, humpback whale, leatherback sea turtle, leopard shark, northern elephant seals, purple sea urchins, rays

*Counties in the coastal region: Alameda, Contra Costa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Los Angeles, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, Orange, San Benito, San Diego, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sonoma, Ventura

*Major cities in the coastal region: San Francisco, Monterey, Los Angeles, San Diego
