Lesson 11


Four Tribes of California
Foldable book with location, shelter, food, interesting facts.

Yokuts
1) Where they lived - San Joaquin Valley and the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada
2) Homes - single and 10-family elliptical structures made of poles covered with tule, grass, or bark thatch
3) Food - fish, wild fowl, seeds, pine nuts, berries, roots, deer, and small game
4) Travel - wide, flat rafts made from lashed tule rushes
5) Arts & Crafts - Baskets and wall paintings


On the map “Key to Tribal Territories”, have the students color in the location of the four tribes discussed. Compare with a map from last time to see what tribes lived in the area where the students live.

Activities
*Foldable book
*Color the four tribes learned about on the “Key to Tribal Territories” map.
*Ceremonial Dancing Shield

What you need:
*cardboard circle about 14" in diameter
*yarn, ribbon or raffia
*feathers
*tape
*paints
*paintbrush
*scissors
*beads
*hole punch

What to do:
1. Pain a design on one side of the circle.
2. Tape a handle to the back.
3. Punch holes around the bottom half of the circle.
4. Thread pieces of yarn, ribbon, or raffia through each hole and then thread two or three beads on each piece of yarn.
5. Tie a feather to each piece of yarn.
