Graduation/Promotion 2017

This year we got to promote Josh from elementary to junior high and Ellie from junior high to high school. It was a special evening to celebrate!

Ellie with one of her "Splendid 7" friends.

Josh is now a junior higher!

Teacher Martha was Josh's favorite teacher from church. She was there to see her grandchildren promoted.

Ellie's comic strip (on the right) was chosen to be displayed with art from the two art classes.

Beautiful inside and out. Ellie has matured and grown so much this past year.

For the 8th grade graduation, parents were asked to send in three pictures as well as a character trait that described our student. For Ellie we chose perseverance. Perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Romans 5:3-4 says that perseverance leads to character and character to hope. James 1:4 says to let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete and not lack anything. We have seen our daughter remain steadfast in her school work, in sports, and in her walk with the Lord. As a result we have seen her grow in character and begin to mature in may ways. We are very proud of her.

We chose the following pictures to highlight Ellie's life.
This one is one of my favorites. She was a big Winnie the Pooh fan as a little one.

This one was taken on the ferris wheel at California Adventure. We rode in one of the swinging cars. She loved it! This reminded us of her adventurous, fun spirit.

And a photo from the present. I took this one on Easter Sunday. Our girl has grown into such a beauty inside and out. We look forward to seeing all the Lord has for her as she enters high school.

Our fab four!

So thankful for the opportunity to homeschool these two!

4th Quarter of the 2016-2017 School Year

This last quarter was super challenging as we were so anxious to be done! We enjoyed a break at the end of March and then pressed on toward the goal to finish at the end of May. It was a great relief to close the books for the final time. We sweetened the end of school by sharing a surprise with the kids on Mother's Day regarding a special trip in June. . .

We completed all of Kay Arthur's Inductive Studies for Kids with her study on prayer, so I needed to find another study for the kids to do. Ellie has a group of friends that we spend a great deal of time with. One of the moms suggested that the girls do a Bible study together. We chose the book "What Happens When Young Women Say Yes to God" by Lysa Terkeurst. The plan was for the girls to work on it on their own during the week and then discuss it when they were together. They managed to discuss several of the lessons, but never got through all of them as a group. Ellie completed the study on her own, however, and enjoyed it. She also began attending a weekly discipleship at church with the junior high group. For Josh, Dennis and I found the book "You Always Have a Friend in Jesus for Boys" by Jim George at our church's bookstore for him to work on. He liked it and did well with it.

We completed Part 1 of America the Beautiful. We covered the Mexican War, the Oregon Trail, the pony express, the Civil War and the early years afterward as well as about the life of cowboys. In addition we learned about John James Audubon, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert E. Lee and Fanny J. Crosby. We also got to know more about the Smithsonian Institute, Niagara Falls, Gettysburg, Yellowstone and Promontory Point in Utah.

Josh finished up his study of flying creatures by studying beetles, flies, true bugs; interesting insects such as dragonflies, damselflies, grasshoppers, cicadas, praying mantises and finally, butterflies.

Ellie learned how to classify life with the Five-Kingdom System; about bones, muscles and skin; and how the body gets energy for life. She did not finish her book - she had three modules left. However, since the remaining material was about the human body and we studied anatomy and physiology last year, I felt OK with her not completing the text.

For language, Ellie continued with grammar supplements. She did her final book study on the book "God's Smuggler" which was about Brother Andrew, a Dutch factory worker, who smuggled Bibles into Soviet controlled Europe. Josh almost completed his language book. He only had two lessons left. His final book study was on C.S. Lewis' book "The Horse and His Boy."

Math was another subject we did not finish completely, but we made good progress.

Our field trips for this quarter were spent as a family. We spent three nights in Carlsbad and visited Legoland, Sea World and the Museum of Making Music. In May, we went to Dennis' school to see their production of  "The Little Mermaid;" and our final three field trip days took place during our surprise trip in June!

Josh finished his golf lessons at the end of May. Ellie finished up the club volleyball season at the beginning of June.

Usually I am someone who likes to "check off all the boxes" and complete all of our curriculum, even if it means working into summer. This year, however, I had a much more relaxed attitude. We didn't really have a summer last year due to the loss of Dennis' mom. We were still working to get her house ready to sell well into November which took a lot of time and found the kids and I sitting in her empty house on a few occasions trying to do schoolwork while contractors came and worked on the house. We also faced some health crises with my grandma and dad which interrupted our schooling because we were needed to help out. Club volleyball became a strain instead of a joy. By May, we all just wanted to be done! I had mixed feelings, like I hadn't done a good job of teaching this year. But then I had a conversation with my PSP administrator. She asked me about my school year and I shared with her all that had gone on during the year and how we hadn't finished all of our curriculum. She encouraged me by pointing out that the kids had learned more than just "book work." They had learned how to be flexible and to prioritize what was really important by following the Lord's directives to honor and serve their grandparents. I jokingly said that this hopefully means they'll take good care of their dad and me when we're old! Her encouragement helped me a lot and it reminded me that this is one of the reasons we have been committed to me being a SAHM and homeschooling our kiddos. Because of this chosen lifestyle, we have had the opportunity to be available to our parents and grandparents - to help and to serve them when needed. And while our bookwork may have suffered some, our kids still learned the material they did cover well and they learned so much more through practical daily living. And ultimately, I trust the Lord to fill in the gaps of our educational process. And on our last day of school, we began our countdown to our surprise trip. . . An Alaskan Disney Cruise!

3rd Quarter of the 2016-2017 School Year

I forgot to journal about the third quarter after the fact, so am piecing together what I can remember!

In Bible we worked through Kay Arthur's Inductive study on prayer. Using the Lord's Prayer as a model, we learned that staying in communication is the key to all relationships, especially our relationship with the Lord. In order to stay in communication with our heavenly Father, we need to spend time talking with Him and getting to know Him. Prayer is talking and listening to God; it's how we stay close to Him. It's a privilege He has given us.

In history we covered the War of 1812, learning about Presidents, Madison, Monroe and Adams. We learned about Mammoth Cave, the Eerie Canal, Sequoyah and about the daily life of mountain men. Next we learned about President Andrew Jackson, the Alamo, John Jay and the Trail of Tears. We ended the quarter by covering Presidents William Henry Harrison, Old Tippecanoe, and John Tyler. We looked at the Mississippi River and Natchez, Mississippi as well as what it was like to travel and work on a steamboat. And we learned about Samuel Morse.

In science, Josh returned to his old favorite - dinosaurs - as he studied all about flying reptiles. He also covered flying insects, learning about their life cycles and behaviors. His final unit for the quarter was on social insects - which included bees, ants and termites.

Ellie studied information on the fossil record, the differences of uniformitarianism and catastrophism, as well as, DNA and the cell.

The kids both enjoy science the most which is good as it makes it easier to study.

By the end of the first semester, Learning Language Arts Through Literature was not working for Ellie. So this quarter we just used it for the book studies and I pulled from another resource to cover grammar. I like LLATL through the elementary years, but I think once a student enters middle school/junior high, the grammar skills are not as clearly explained. I'll be doing something else with Josh next year for sure. The book study this quarter for Ellie was a biography of Eric Liddell. She enjoyed it and we plan to watch "Chariots of Fire" with her. Josh continued to do well with LLATL and completed a book study on "Big Red."

We continued to work through math. I think I have decided that Josh needs to be more challenged, so may consider having him do Pre-Algebra next year. Will be looking for a different math program for Ellie as she will be doing Algebra next year. Will look into online options.

This quarter we did two field trips. In January we went as a family to the California Science Center to see the Pixar exhibit. In February we took advantage of a homeschool day and went to the Natural History Museum with friends.

Ellie joined a club volleyball team which kept us busy with two practices a week and tournaments about once a month. Josh did not do golf lessons during the winter session, but began again for the spring session.

We were anxious for a break and really looked forward to our mini vacation to Carlsbad during Dennis' spring break at the end of March.

Golf

Josh continued with his golf lessons this year. He continues to improve little by little, but wasn't ready to move up to the next level yet.

We often get to enjoy watching the deer at the golf course.

Club Volleyball

Following Ellie's season with CYAA volleyball, we signed Ellie up for weekly classes with a local volleyball club during their winter session. During the first month, the coach talked with the girls about playing club and let them know that there were openings on several teams. Ellie's friend had already joined a team there, and knowing that she wanted to try out for the high school team at Western Christian High School, she decided she'd like to give club a try.  We thought this experience would help her learn skills that would be needed for more competitive volleyball in the high school environment.

Overall, it was not a positive experience for Ellie. From the beginning she felt tremendous pressure to perform by her coach. This, along with her coach's coaching style, created a lot of anxiety for Ellie. We did have a meeting with her coach and the head coach and Ellie did a very good job of communicating how she was feeling. Her coach acknowledged her feelings and although she did make some changes, it still was a difficult time.

In spite of the taxing environment, however, Ellie did learn a great deal about competitive volleyball and grew in her skills. And thankfully, the experience paid off because she made the JV volleyball team at Western Christian High School and her coach told her she would be a starter.

We have watched our girl grow in perseverance through the years. This was another instance where she showed this character trait. While it was difficult and we hated to see her losing her joy for something she had loved doing, we were very proud of her for sticking it out and finishing strong. We look forward to watching her play this upcoming year.
