Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and mind. -Psalm 26:2
Taking the easy way out is common for today's Christians. Most believers consider the testing of their faith "You know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
something to be avoided or eliminated. Instead of walking through life's trials with God, many by-pass the challenge and supersede God's will with man-made answers. James 1:3-4, however, gives us God's perspective for trials:
Is homeschooling stretching you to the limits and trying your patience? God is working in your life and your children's lives. He knows how demanding each day can be and wants you to trust Him. Place your hand in His today. Waiting on God for answers is never easy, but the spiritual lesson of endurance is only learned by going through the process. Will you let Him teach you to "let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything?" (James 1:4)

Our homeschool life is characterized by LEARNING new things, EXPLORING the world around us and DISCOVERING who we are in Christ; aka LEAD. . . "Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead." 2 Chronicles 1:10

Promotion Night 2016
Dennis was in Utah for Promotion Night, but the kids and I decided to go anyway. It's a nice way for the kids to feel that they have finished the year and are ready to move on.
Our administrator, Marilyn Stephens, and her husband, Bill, opened the night followed by worship.
Congratulations, Josh, on completing 5th grade! You're a 6th grader now!
One year of junior high done, one to go! Good job, Ellie! Welcome to 8th grade!
Marilyn is always presented a gift from the families at Promotion Night. We appreciate her!
We happened to sit by Lindsay's family. She is one of Ellie's friends from Friday School.
We're in this together!

4th Quarter 2015-2016
We made it! It took quite a bit of motivation to finish the last few weeks of school, but I am so happy and relieved to say we completed 180 days of school, finished all of our curriculum and did so before Memorial Day! (No one wants to be doing school in June.)

For Bible this quarter we studied the book of James using Kay Arthur's Inductive Bible Studies for Kids. While the information was good, I felt like there wasn't as much content as some of her other Bible studies. However, from studying this book we learned about faith that is real and how to be a doer of the Word. James wrote about the "Royal Law" which teaches us to put others first. We saw that God is sovereign, in control of everything that happens to us - good or bad; and that it is through the difficult things that our faith is tested to make us perfect and complete. We read about why we are to pray and that we can go to God and ask for wisdom and how to avoid temptation (there is always a way out). We discovered how to handle anger and our tongue. We learned what sin and worldliness are and most importantly were reminded that Jesus is coming back again. At the end of last quarter I had the kids begin a journal on what they were learning during Bible time. They wrote a verse that stood out to them and a short sentence or two about what it meant. I pray this will help them learn to be doers of the Word and not just hearers only.
The kids finished up their IEW lessons with a final two paragraph essay from their personal "brain

We did not go on any other school field trips, but we plan to do some educational things on our family vacation in June.
We celebrated Mother's Day with the Henry family. . .
and the Davis family
Ellie went to her first junior high camp at Mile High Pines. This was the same camp where we took the 6th graders when I taught at Calvary Chapel Downey. She had a great time! And I didn't cry when she left!
Josh took golf lessons.
Ellie played basketball for her third year with CYAA.
We celebrated the end of the school year by seeing "Captain America Civil War" and stuffing ourselves at John's Incredible Pizza Co.
The final school event for the year. . . Promotion Night.
We now officially have a 6th grader and an 8th grader!

Golf Spring 2016
Josh continued with his golf lessons this spring with First Tee of Pasadena. His skills are improving which we noticed when we played mini golf at Johns Incredible Pizza one afternoon. He was making great puts! At one of his lessons, the kids went out on the course in groups. The coach told Dennis Josh was a good leader of the group. Of course, you know how we feel about sports teaching character, and First Tee really emphasizes this both on and off the course. Each week Josh has to write down how he showed the character trait they are learning about in golf, at school and at home.
He has been in the introductory Player level for two years and his coach said he is ready to move up to the intermediate Par level. To move up he will have to take a test on the rules of golf and play nine holes. He and Dennis will work on this during the summer. Good job, son!
Basketball 2016
Basketball season this year had a very different feel than previous years. Maybe because this was Division 1, the girls were just more serious about basketball and not as interested in having fun and getting to know one another. We had some very good players on our team, but everyone made a contribution, even the two girls who had never played before. One of the toughest things about this season was that we always had girls missing from practice and games. They never really had an opportunity to work on playing together as a complete team. In spite of this, we did win our first four games, but lost the next two. We went into playoffs in second place. Our very last game was super tough. We were missing three girls and had to play outside in the afternoon heat. Our girls gave it everything they had, but they just got too hot and tired and couldn't keep up with the other team. We ended the playoffs in second place. Definitely not a bad finish considering our girls gave it all they had.
Ellie continues to grow in this sport. I always admire her for stepping into a new situation each season and giving her best. She listens to the coach and the stronger players on the team for guidance. She tries to put into practice what she is learning. She admits that she doesn't always know what to do, but she tries to defend for her team and get the rebounds. She made a few baskets this year which was exciting. She is also a great encourager on her team. Even when she was sick one week and couldn't play, she wanted to be at the game to cheer her team on. She may not be the best player on the team, but we are proud of her none-the-less.
I read a transcript of a radio program from Focus on the Family. The guests for the day were Steve and Lorri Zeller. Their three boys were recruited to Division 1 schools for basketball and are all playing for the NBA. They have written a book called "Raising Boys the Zeller Way." In the interview Steve Zeller said the following: "We were more worried about the academics and what they
were learning from the sport that they were playing because sports teach so much
character. They teach teamwork. They teach how to listen to an authority figure / how
the fans are going to respond—and all the criticism that you get and all the praise that
you get—and how to handle all that. That’s what we used sports for—is we used it to be
able to help us be able to build the character." I really liked this reminder that sports is more than just winning the game or being the MVP. It's about how you play and how you grow as a person. Humility, perseverance, encouraging others, and being a good sport whether you win or lose are the things people will remember about you; not how many games or medals you won.
It's a family commitment when Ellie plays a sport, but one we are willing to make to help her be active and to help her grow in wisdom, in stature and in favor with God and man (Luke 2:52). I am thankful for CYAA and the "God first, sport's second" motto. One day the basketball will stop dribbling, and who you are is what will matter.
